What the business has

Money in the till, in business bank accounts and on payment cards, as of today.

Goods for sale at what they cost you. If the wholesale price has changed, use today’s wholesale price.

Only debts you expect to collect. Leave out doubtful ones.

Optional. Cash, deposits and gold that are not part of the business.

What the business owes

Only debts due within the next 12 months count — the approach of contemporary fiqh councils.

Nisab

Ask your bank or a jeweler for the price. With both prices you see the result under both nisabs.

Zakat is due when a full lunar year has passed since your capital first reached the nisab.

Not included: equipment, furniture and tools used in the business.

This is a calculation based on the established positions of the four Sunni madhhabs, not a fatwa. In complex cases, consult a qualified scholar — an imam or a mufti.

How to calculate zakat on a business

How do you calculate zakat on a business?

Add up the cash and bank money of the business, the stock for sale at cost and the money customers owe you that you expect to collect. Subtract what you owe suppliers within the next 12 months (in the main Shafi‘i position, debts are not subtracted). If the result reaches the nisab and a full lunar year has passed, the zakat is 2.5% of it.

An example

Cash $864, stock $540, customers owe you $100, you owe suppliers $300. The base is $1,204. With an example silver price of $2 per gram, the silver nisab is 595 g × $2 = $1,190, so zakat is due: 2.5% × $1,204 = $30.10.

Gold or silver nisab?

The silver nisab (595 g) is the classical position and is in favor of the poor; contemporary fiqh councils use gold (85 g). Where a local zakat authority announces a nisab, you can enter that amount.

What is not included?

Equipment, furniture and tools used in the business, and the premises you work in. Only goods held for sale count as stock.
